History

Shady Rest is Family owned and operated by the Sides & Champions.  Emilie Hovis Sides has owned a house in Windy Hill (611 35th Avenue south) since 1971.  Windy Hill is like her second home and she has witnessed all the growth and changes throughout the years, from quiet family vacation cottages to tall contemporary condominiums.  One of the charms of Shady Rest Too is that it preserves the old fashioned beach atmosphere but is upgraded with modern conveniences.  The bungalow was built in 1955 and retains the red broken tile floor and painted plank paneling throughout giving it the feel of lost summer days past.

Pettycoat Junction jokes notwithstanding, Shady Rest Too was named for a region in Gaston County that is south of High Shoals and to the west of Hardin.  This area was once known as Shady Rest, a moniker which has been lost over the years.  Our family (Hovis) owned a store (est. 1961) in this neighborhood named Shady Rest in reference to the location.   Haskell Sides became co-owner of the store and also owned rental property and so this business became known by the same moniker.  The store and rentals were sold after his passing and consequentially the house at 4516 Surf Street was purchased.  Once we saw the big myrtle tree in the back yard we knew that the old family business name was a perfect fit.  We designated the house “Shady Rest” in honor of Haskell Sides and the Hovis family business and added the “Too” as it is the second family beach house in Windy hill.
